San Francisco Bay Area native born to Mexican and Nicaraguan parents. Esther Muñoz is the youngest of seven, a first generation college graduate, and first Ph.D. in all of her immediate and extended family. She was a non-traditional academic trajectory student, meaning that she did not start college until she was 25 years old. She started at City College of San Francisco, where she obtained an Associates degree in math and science, and an associates to transfer in Geology to the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). At UCSC, she acquired a Bachelors in Science for the Earth Science department with an emphasis on Planetary Sciences. Afterwards, she accomplished the dual-titled doctorate program at Pennsylvania State University in Geosciences & Biogeochemistry. Now, beginning a post-doc at Stanford University to focus on archaeal gene evolution.
